Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island
Alcatraz Island is filled with history.  The buildings originally were built on the island during the civil war as a fort.  There were howitzers pointed towards the gate, to fire upon any ships that would enter the bay.  In the early 1900's, the fort was converted into a military prison, and finally into the maximum security federal prison.  Decommissioned in the 1960's, the prison is now open for tourists to walk through.
